Oracle Solaris

Originally released as Sun Solaris in 1993, Solaris or SunOS was the name of the Sun company’s Unix variant operating originally for SPARC computers. It is sold together with the OPENLOOK user interface OpenWindows. This bundle is known as Solaris.

In June 2005, Sun announced that it would move away from the proprietary nature of Solaris and release most of its code base under the CDDL license. Sun would also release Solaris under the new name OpenSolaris. However, after Oracle purchased Sun in January 2010, it also acquired the rights to Sun Solaris, which was later renamed to Oracle Solaris, and discontinued OpenSolaris.
